Diazepam
Indications/Uses
Convulsions, including febrile convulsions in childn. As sedative before exploratory exam & treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >3 yr 10 mg. Elderly, debilitated patient, childn 1-3 yr 5 mg.
Contraindications
Myasthenia gravis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Reduced kidney/liver function. Elderly. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. High doses over prolonged periods increases risk of tolerance & habituation. Abrupt discontinuation.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, dizziness, difficulties w/ concentration, ataxia. Rarely, paradoxical reactions eg, excitation, aggressiveness & hallucinations.
Drug Interactions
Disulfiram, cimetidine & omeprazole increases the effect of diazepam. Rifampicin increases the clearance of diazepam. Concomitant use w/ ketamine, theophylline, alcohol, hypnotics, neuroleptics, antihistamines, morphine & its analogues.
